Spring Training - Evaluation and Checklist

The first Spring Training brought dozens of artists to Kroeber Hall to meet with art professionals for one-on-one consultations.

Whether seeking advice about:

*a new body of work

*website

*presentation materials

*prepared grant or residency applications,

in twenty-minute appointments, artists had the benefit of practical and professional advice in consultation chosen from a group of artists, gallerists, curators, and critics.

Participants were able to frame their sessions with a prepared format suggested by the College Art Association. This structure encouraged an organized presentation of materials, presentation, and questions.

Regardless of stage in their career, artists all seem to have one common question:

Particularly for artists who had graduated earlier, the kind of statement in common usage today is a longer, more detailed, and more analytical statement than may have been presented in the past.

At a Meet Up following our Spring Training event, participants shared their experiences with others who did not have the opportunity for a consultation.

A hero is a person of notable and distinguished courage or ability. Songs, films, and paintings have celebrated heroes and their deeds for millennia. Are the creator of the image of the hero complicit? Who is the person who paints a hero? It seems like our heroes are better than in the past, maybe a bit more real and less "super." So how do we paint new heroes? Paintings by three powerhouse Bay Area painters on the subject of important personages.

In her first solo exhibition with the gallery, Gyöngy Laky will present a series of work examining our complex relationship with nature. Sculptural pieces containing words, letters, and symbols are made of painted and stained branches and twigs combined with screws, nails, wires, and plastic figurines.

This show will feature a selection of work exploring on the transitional space between visual and textual aspects of Laky's work, such as Writing on the Wall, a grid of wooden objects seemingly shifting between two symbolic information codes. The organic essence of the natural wood contrasted with the spiky industrial elements draws upon the ambivalence of the natural and artificial, organic and industrial, and encapsulate co-existing feelings of violence and serenity, aggression and sanctuary.

Born in Budapest, Hungary, in 1944, Gyöngy Laky studied at UC Berkeley where she earned both her B.A. and M.A.degrees (B.A., 1970 and M.A., 1971). She has exhibited in museums and galleries throughout the United States and internationally in France, Sweden, Italy, Spain, Denmark, Holland, Switzerland, Hungary, Lithuania, Colombia, the Philippines, China, and England.

A past recipient of a National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship, and a Professor Emeritus at the University of California, Davis, Laky's work is in museum collections in Europe and the United States, including the San Francisco MOMA, The Smithsonian's Renwick Museum of American Art, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Oakland Museum, and the Contemporary Museum in Honolulu. The Smithsonian Institution is currently assembling a collection of Laky's personal papers, photographs and documents for the Archives of American Art.

Sonya Rapoport: The Nuclear Family in the Atomic Age

The Nuclear Family in the Atomic Age updates the 1977 artwork, "Horizontal Cobalt," that I had created in collaboration with the Nuclear Science Division of the Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory. In that artwork I had translated the Laboratory's experimental output by drawing directly on the computer printouts that described the transmutation of chemical elements when they are bombarded with nuclear substances. Nearby at the associated Livermore Laboratory, the employees and their immediate families were celebrating the once a year Family Day, where visitors walked amidst the H-Bomb mock-ups. In the current artwork, The Nuclear Family in the Atomic Age, I digitally integrated a photograph of each member of my family into a relevant artwork created by Roy Lichtenstein. I then selected a word from the nuclear glossary that related to each collaged image. This ironic juxtaposition has a disturbing effect, purposefully conveying a critical attitude toward nuclear projects. Lichtenstein also created ironic work. His adherence to traditional structure along with his use of images selected from narratives of corporately endorsed domestic, romantic and consumer activities illuminates the irony available in my work. The nuclear era coincides with the era represented in Lichtenstein's work, making for a natural historical overlay. But just as Lichtenstein denaturalized scenes that were meant to represent an everyday life, my work denaturalizes what the corporate and scientific worlds worked to naturalize in nuclear power and nuclear weapons. The photographs of members of my own family incorporated into Lichtenstein artwork exist in a space of detachment and ironic distance, wherein the viewer is able to contemplate the harrowing juxtaposition of family and nuclear bombs.

Genn Toffey’s paintings reflect her fascination with the human spirit. Her Great Women of the Past series focuses on women who changed the world – often under hardship. Toffey developed her signature style of painting in thin transparent layers twenty years ago when she lived in New York. Genn Toffey recently moved to the East Bay area after living in South Korea for ten years. A Berkeley native, Toffey is a 3rd generation woman artist. Both her daughters are also professional artists.

The University of California at Berkeley Department of Art Practice is organizing a show of 40+ years of Richard Shaws’ students’ work. All former students from The San Francisco Art Institute and UC Berkeley are invited to show work. We are hoping for small works (and egos).

The installation will begin Monday April 2^nd 2012. The Department of Art Practice will be throwing party for Richard along with the reception for the show April 5th 2012. The Department of Art Practice will unfortunately not be able to provide funding for shipping to or from the show.

Nancy Genn: The Shape of Water

This exhibition is being held in conjunction with a reenactment of the 1966 Cowell College Fountain Dedication Ceremony. Complete with a performance by the original Cowell alumni returning to perform as they did at the original celebration. A contingent of Osher Lifelong Learning members; emeritii faculty; current faculty, students and staff; and with the current Cowell a capella choir also performing, should make this a fun event.

Nancy Genn’s style is deeply personal, finding inspiration and themes between geometric abstraction, landscape and architectural motifs with great attention to light and to the calligraphic images that have constantly influenced Genn’s works throughout her career. While growing up she was strongly influenced by her mother’s lobbying efforts on behalf of nature and trees, and many of Genn’s works take their semblance from nature as does the Cowell fountain she designed in 1966 and those pieces in the exhibit at the Smith Gallery.

The exhibition features seven large scroll paintings, mixed media works on paper, and six bronze sculptures.

Spaces of Life: The Art of Sonya Rapoport

The art of Sonya Rapoport has long operated as a bridge between the public sphere of intellectual curiosity and scholarship, and the domestic one of spiritual inquiry and nurturing. Spaces of Life presents a group of Rapoport’s interactive works, created between 1980-2010, that function in the intersection between questioning and inviting.

The installation will be structured so as to infuse the spaces of the museum with the energy of the artist’s Berkeley home and studio. A mixture of documentation of original interactive installations, domestic objects that provide a launching pad for interactions, and new interpretations of the works’ systems of interaction will be developed in conjunction with Mills students and departments. Visitors to the gallery will engage in ongoing, distributed performance actions that draw on imagery and ideas from a range of disciplines including biochemistry, anthropology, psychology, and feminist studies.

Central to this installation of Rapoport’s work at Mills is Objects on My Dresser (1979-1983), an 11 phase work intended as a kind of “conceptual visit” to the artist’s home and studio. The titular dresser, which has occupied Rapoport’s foyer for decades, will be installed along with the original objects that sparked her investigation of the connections between symbols, words and ideas. Documentation of “netweb plots” created by Rapoport and by visitors to installations of previous project phases will be included along with a new “netweb plot” created with Mills students. The “Mills plot” will include images, correlative images and words determined by Mills students in advance of the exhibition, and will be on display for visitors to the exhibition to manipulate and customize according to their own, personal correlations.

As part of MCAM’s current exhibition, Spaces of Life: The Art of Sonya Rapoport, Sonya Rapoport and Dr. Revathi Vikram,psychiatrist, come together to explore the artist's memories of her past work and the life experiences that give her work context. Central to this discussion is Rapoport’s ongoing work Objects On My Dresser: Shared Dynamics, an interactive “netweb plot” from which connections between symbols, words and ideas are made. Over the course of the exhibition, gallery visitors have been invited to participate in this work by manipulating and customizing a new “netweb plot.” Dr. Revathi will analyze the recorded actions and motivations that have created this new plot in an effort to determine acollective Mills consciousness.

This performance with Dr. Revathi is an updating of Rapoport’s original collaboration with psychologist Winifred de Vos.

One on One with Squeak Carnwath

On Thursday evening, February 2 at 6:30, Squeak will be at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art to participate in the museum’s One On One gallery talks. “Get a singular take on a work of art each Thursday evening as one artist, curator, or specialist shares a perspective on one artwork.” From January 26 through March, past winners of the SECA Art Award will discuss works by other artists on view at SFMOMA.

In 1980 Squeak received the SECA Art Award. On Thursday she will talk for 20 minutes about one of her favorite pieces, Vija Celmins’ Blackboard Tableau #1 (pictured above). Please join her at 6:30 in the Haas Atrium (ground floor, main entrance) before moving into the gallery.

If you go to SFMOMA for Squeak’s One On One gallery talk, or for any other reason before April 3, 2012, be sure to see Fifty Years of Bay Area Art: The SECA Awards, which includes a painting Squeak did in 1979, My Own Ghost #3 (Small Songs #2), as well as a 4-minute video in which Squeak “details the process of making her paintings and considers the ways viewers might approach her work.” There are lots of other artworks and videos of artists in the exhibition as well.
