Lure: Bay Area Artists Explore the Sea

SFMOMA Artists Gallery
June 15 - August 15, 2013


In recognition of the America's Cup sailing regatta taking place this summer on the San Francisco Bay, this exhibition brings together works by Bay Area artists who look to the sea as a primary reference in creating art. The exhibition offers a water-centric exploration of a vital Bay Area resource, attempting to reveal fresh insight and meanings inspired by the region's seas.

Artists include Julie Alvarado, Suzy Barnard, Leo Bersamina, Willard Dixon, Jessica Dunne, Nancy Genn, Colin Gift, Julian Honig, Katina Houston, Abner Kingman, Janel Lepin, Ian MacLean, Bonnie Neumann, Judy O'Shea, Susan Parker, Emily Payne, Ken Roberts, Tim Svenonious, and Marie Van Elder.

Kimberly Rowe's NYC Gallery Debut

Kimberly Rowe's piece Laissez Vivre (la Nappe d'Autel) will be part of New York City's Viridian Artists 24th Annual International Exhibition, juried by Elizabeth Sussman, curator at the Whitney Museum of American Art.

The exhibition opens on Tuesday, July 2nd, and runs through Saturday, July 20th.

Reception on Thursday, July 18th, from 6 to 9 pm.

Sonya Rapoport - DUALITY

Sonya Rapoport is exhibiting DUALITY, a digital collage, at Gallery Sensenci in Shizuoka, Japan, from March 2 through March 24, 2013.

The theme of the photo exhibition is 'A-mu', a Japanese verb. The word 'A-mu' has several meanings:

   (1) to knit (stockings); to net (a hammock); to plait (straw); to braid

(the hair); to weave (a mat); to twist

   (2) to weave (facts into a narrative); to compile (a history); to

compose (an essay); to devise (a method); to contrive (a plan); to work out (a system);

to frame (rules, etc.)

DUALITY depicts the double tower-like coiled hair style of a Nigerian woman. This hair style crowns each of two portraits of U.S. journalist Jill Carroll.  In Jill Carroll's  image under the left woven hair tower, Carroll is crying for release from an Iraqui prison. In Jill Carroll's image under the right hair woven tower, she is talking about her pleasant jail experience after her release from prison, but still under her captors control.

An exhibit of new work that explores the abstract concept of time through the lens of a daily art practice.  Featuring two large-scale abstract painting installations, smaller canvases, prints on paper, and new works on metal.  The accompanying catalog Painting Time will also be available.  With essays by art critic DeWitt Cheng and SLATE gallery director Danielle Fox, the text chronicles the conceptual grounding, methods, and personal history that Ladewig invests in this body of work.

"ImPOSSIBLE CONVERSATIONS?" Data Gathering Event 

One Day Only!

Sunday, February 10th, 2013 from 1 to 4 pm

Martina }{ Johnston would like to invite you to a one-day special Data Gathering Event for artist Sonya Rapoport's project "ImPOSSIBLE CONVERSATIONS?" on Sunday, February 10th, 2013 from 1 to 4 pm. 

Sonya Rapoport will be presenting a new interactive project and invites viewers to come and participate in a simple matching experiment under controlled conditions. The results of this experiment will become part of "ImPOSSIBLE CONVERSATIONS?" and will be exhibited at the Fresno Art Museum in May of this year.  

"ImPOSSIBLE CONVERSATIONS?" is structured by Alvin Roth and Lloyd Shapley's "Market Design and Matching Theory", which won the 2012 Nobel Prize in Economics. This theory explores how people, institutions, and companies find and select each other to create stable matches. The work takes the form of a series of collages; each consists of a black and white photograph of a "pattern painting" that Rapoport created and exhibited in the late 60's, overlaid on a contemporary newspaper advertisement, and juxtaposed with a short text appropriated from the media.

Based in the Bay Area, Sonya Rapoport has exhibited her conceptual and new media artwork internationally. She recently had retrospective exhibitions at the Kala Institute in Berkeley and Mills College Art Museum. She received her MFA from UC Berkeley in 1949. Many of her web-based digital pieces can be experienced on her website, and she maintains an active blog about her work.

Sonya Rapoport is exhibiting her web piece, "MAKE ME A JEWISH MAN: An Alternative Masculinity,"  in Techfest 2013 IIT Bombay, India - Asia's Largest Science and Technology Festival by Indian Institute of Technology.

"MAKE ME A JEWISH MAN: An Alternative Masculinity," is an interactive web-based artwork. It describes the power of blood and the significance of oil in the cultivation of the ideal Jewish man. This process is paralleled with the morphology of its horticultural hermaphroditic counterpart, the olive tree, from which oil, the light of Jewish Law, is processed. Olive Oyl, partner to macho Popeye, is the spokesperson pop-up who interrupts the edicts to take a feminist stance. (This may be viewed at: http://users.lmi.net/sonyarap/mmajewishman/index.html)

Techfest, a non-profit student organization, started off in 1998 with the motto "Technology is fun." This is a great and unique forum of confluence for Industry and Academia where exchange of knowledge takes place by showcasing of cutting edge technology and breakthroughs in science in the form of exhibits. The fifteenth Edition of Techfest is scheduled to be held from 3rd Jan to 5th January 2013. Techfest brings in a participation of about 92,000.

I want to let you know about two very interesting holiday shows in the East Bay where my paintings will be shown along with the work of other artists.  

The Cecile Moochnek Gallery which represents my work will hold the annual Gift of Art ShowNovember 14 – January 15, with a reception for the gallery artists Friday November 16, 6 – 8 pm.

Kala Institute will hold its Artists’ Annual Exhibition/Fresh Works December 13 – February 2, with the opening reception on Thursday December 13, 6 – 8 pm.

I will be out of town and will miss the November opening at the Moochnek Gallery but will attend the Kala opening in December and hope to see you there.

PK Frizzell: Evidence of Things Unseen

PK Frizzell "Evidence of Things Unseen" (2012), installation: mixed media, lights, and lenses, 6 ft x 8 ft x 3 ft. Photo by the artist.

In a new installation, PK Frizzell uses text, plant materials, and discarded broken objects to explore the nature of mind and memory. The installation is viewed through a grid of lenses, creating a vast and dizzying world. In a second body of work, Frizzell shows us a place where the spiritual intersects with the material, by overlaying viscerally physical surfaces made of studio detritus with shadow images imbedded in glass. 

PK Frizzell graduated from the art program at UC Berkeley in the late sixties, having studied with Pete Voulkos, Jim Melchert and Ron Nagle. Later, she established a ceramics studio and showed work throughout the US and parts of Asia, and was included in History of American Ceramics by foremost ceramic art historian Elaine Levin. She has participated extensively in juried and invitational American Craft Council shows and competitions. Recently Frizzell has explored and developed new media and methods of producing two and three dimensional work using paper, paint, x-rays, photographs, lenses and digital manipulation of visual information. PK Frizzell has shown with Mercury 20 Gallery since 2010.

Sonya Rapoport will present the next phase of her project, The Nuclear Family in the Atomic Age, Extended, as an Audience Participation Performance, at the Zero1 Biennial. This performance will take place at the Performance Art Institute in San Francisco. The Nuclear Family in the Atomic Age was recently presented at the CEMEX Auditorium, Stanford University with Richard Rhodes' play, Reykjavik. The play is based on the conversation between Presidents Reagan and Gorbachev about human rights and limiting nuclear arms.. Rapoport's presentation of the extended Nuclear Family portrays the trials and errors in reawakening the Golem for protection against Atomic disaster.

Curated by Sean Fletcher and Isabel Reichert, The Artist is Elsewhere, an evocative nod to Marina Abramovic's famous retrospective,"The Artist is Present", is a juxtaposition of radically different ways of existing in time and space. Artists participating in the event include Linda Ford, Justin Charles Hoover, Scott Kildall, Sonya Rapoport, Roland Roos, Stoll and Wachall, Lee Walton, Gordon Winiemko, and Michael Zheng.

The symposium will begin at 9 a.m. with registration, coffee, and informal mini-interviews with attendees. The morning panel introduction will begin at 10:00 am. The morning program ends at noon and lunch will be provided.

The symposium moderator is Jan Wurm, she will focus on the choices, compromises and commitment that are inherent in an artist's life. As an introduction to the panel discussion, Jan will introduce each individual panelist, who will then give a brief visual presentation(approx 6 - 8 minutes). After the entire panel’s visual presentations, the panel discussion will open with reflections, exchange, and observations.

Lunch will be a buffet catered by Ann's Catering in the Worth Ryder Gallery and attendees will have an opportunity to gather in small groups. At the close of lunch, written questions from attendees will be accepted as a starting point in the afternoon session.

You can rsvp for lunch and pay day of, or prepay using paypal on your right. Lunch is $15.00

The afternoon panel will begin at 1:15pm and ends at 3:30pm. The afternoon session will follow an informal and free-flowing format. Artist educators will be joining the morning panelists as discussants as the table is removed and the discussion merges into a dialogue with the symposium attendees. There will be reception in the Worth RyderGallery at the end of the symposium.

In conclusion, participants will be asked to give a brief exit interview so that experiences and thoughts may be posted and shared via the Art Alumni Blog.
